Richmond is a diverse ‘young’ city thriving with families in all stages of life. It is located just south of Vancouver, BC. The Richmond Child and Youth Program is located in a community clinic within walking distance to Richmond Hospital. The Richmond Step Up Step Down Program is a community-based public mental health service for children under 19 years of age with significant emotional and/or behavioural problems who present to the hospital (ED or PEU) or who are potentially requiring hospitalization from community. Assessments and evidence-informed treatments are provided to children in conjunction with their families. Acute care is offered with a goal to ensure transition back into the community and connection with Child and Youth Programs is facilitated or to prevent hospitalization.

 

The Step Up Step Down Team will work collaboratively with the ER and PEU psychiatrists, emergency physicians and staff, and have. team based approach. The Step Up Step Down Team will be compromised of full time child psychiatry, a psychiatric nurse clinician, mental health clinicians and youth outreach workers.

 

As a Psychiatrist with Vancouver Coastal Health, you will:

  • Report to the Medical Lead for Infant, Child & Youth and the Head and Medical Director, Department of Psychiatry, Richmond Mental Health & Substance Use Services.
  • Provide an innovative, evidence-based and comprehensive array of psychiatric assessment and treatments to children and youth under 19 years of age who have presented to ED or inpatient units in psychiatric crisis or who may require transition into hospital due to clinical deterioration.
  • Work as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team that may include other physicians, nurses, psychiatric nurses, client families, social workers, youth outreach workers and clinicians.
  • Work with children and youth who present to the ED or PEU, requiring urgent crisis based psychiatric care and bridging to community-based resources in addition to youth who may require more intensive support due to clinical deterioration prior to consideration of admission to hospital.
  • Have a strong knowledge base in medication management and psychotherapeutic modalities.
  • Have experience in working with children and youth, their families, and the challenges that face these families.
  • Be involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of new programs and will participate in the training and education of medical students, residents and other allied health professionals. 

 

 

Qualifications

Education, Licensing, & Experience:

  • Current College of Physicians of BC (CPSBC) License - Full
  • Canadian College of Family Practitioners (CCFP) - Desired
  • Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC)
  • Completed two full years of training in Child & Adolescent psychiatry.
  • Candidates must meet credentialing requirements of Vancouver Coastal Health.

 

Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Strong community collaborative skills must be demonstrated.
  • A good knowledge of child relational/developmental/psycho therapeutic theory and practice is essential.
  • Collaboration with other community service providers is essential.
  • A demonstrated ability working as a member of an interdisciplinary mental health team.
  • A commitment to participate in new methods in health improvement and care delivery.
