As a  Medical Technologist at VCH you will:

  • Provide technical leadership and expertise in the provisioning of Laboratory and Diagnostic Services for the Central Coast (Bella Coola/Bella Bella).
  • Participate in the planning and coordination of services; monitor the quality of technical work performed to ensure departmental standards are met and safety procedures are followed.
  • Schedule staff activities and participate in recruitment and performance management; train and coach team members.
  • Facilitate workplace solutions and the implementation of new techniques and procedures.
  • Perform a variety of routine/complex tests utilizing manual and automated procedures/instruments, when required.
  • Supervise at least one (1) other Medical Technologist and a total staff of up to and including seven (7) FTE.

ABOUT BELLA COOLA, BC:

 

Bella Coola sits in a mountain valley at the head of the North Bentinck Channel, 500 km north of Vancouver, with a population of about 1800 people. The community is at the end of a long, truly magnificent fjord, on the mainland coast of British Columbia. Bella Coola General Hospital has 10 acute bed, 5 residential beds and a 3 bed emergency department open 24/7, along with a laboratory, diagnostic imaging services, Telehealth, Mental Health, Public Health, Home & Community Support Services. Also within the hospital are a medical clinic and a pharmacy.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Certified by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).

  • Bachelor of Science degree or an Advanced Registered certificate or completion of a supervisory/management program plus a minimum of five (5) years’ recent, related experience including two (2) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Regular travel within the Central Coast is required. Expenses will be reimbursed as per the Collective Agreement.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge and recent related experience in related discipline.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the standards of practice and guidelines for Medical Laboratory Technologists established by the CSMLS and/or other relevant national professional associations.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a team member, leader and facilitator.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, medical personnel and other health care staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment and to organize and prioritize competing demands
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with and/or guide others in resolution of conflict issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and deal with others effectively in a supportive and positive manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage own learning to meet future challenges within the organization.
  • Basic knowledge of computerized systems relating to the laboratory.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Skill in the operation of related equipment and in techniques appropriate to the laboratory.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
