Job Title: Registered Nurse - Oncology Training Opportunity
Work Site: Squamish Hospital
Status: Temporary Part Time - Baseline-With End Date (0.48 FTE) - Until approximately December 2018 or Return of Incumbent
Start Date: As Soon As Possible
Salary: $32.94 - $43.24 per hour
Hours: 0800-1600

Within the context of a patient and family centred care model, and in accordance with the College of Registered Nurses’ of British Columbia (CRNBC) standards of professional practice, Code of Ethics and the established mission, vision, values, objectives and policies of Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, North Coast/Coast Garibaldi Service Delivery Area, provides nursing care to patients undergoing Chemotherapy and working independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Enhances quality of life from the perspective of the patient/family. Consults, confers, and collaborates with other health care givers. Demonstrates expertise and leadership in nursing practice. Maintains and advances clinical competence. Participates on designated hospital committees/teams and approved research projects as assigned.



  • Current practicing registration with the College Registered Nurses’ of British Columbia (CRNBC).
  • Graduation from an approved school of nursing plus two years previous related experience supplemented by courses in the care of cancer patients or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the Hospital.
  • Oncology certification required.


Broad knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a patient/family centred model of care.
Broad knowledge of CRNBC's standards for nursing practice.
Thorough knowledge of the indications, actions, reactions, routes, dosages, and side effects of drugs used in a Chemotherapy environment.
Thorough knowledge of nursing problems commonly encountered in a Chemotherapy environment.
Thorough knowledge of the physiological and behavioural aspects of cancer illnesses.
Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care.
Demonstrated ability in nursing practice to assess and manage Chemotherapy care.
Demonstrated ability to respond immediately and appropriately to sudden emergencies.
Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
Demonstrated ability to plan and implement plans of care.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
Demonstrated ability to communicate with, and deal effectively with, patients and their families, co-workers, physicians, and other health care staff.
Demonstrated ability to communicate in writing accurately, concisely, and clearly.
Demonstrated ability to teach patients and their families.
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work direction.
Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques
Skill in techniques appropriate to cancer care nursing.
Skill in the use of monitoring and support equipment.
Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized patient care information system.

Eligibility for the post-basic training education is restricted to applicants with:
• A minimum of 2 years’ recent acute medical/surgical experience,
• Intravenous Therapy Certification,
• Central Venous Catheter Certification.

Applicants must successfully complete the post-basic training education prior to working in the Department.

The post-basic training education program requires full time attendance. Funding will consist of 100% of wages, tuition and books during the training program.
Training Details: BCCA Chemotherapy Certification Program
• Registration deadline: December 15, 2017
• Online, self-directed theoretical component & exam
• Workshop Sessions: January 29th & 30th (Videoconference)
• Clinical practicum at Lions Gate Hospital

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.
