Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is looking for a Medical Director, Resident Doctors Employment Affairs.
The Medical Director, Resident Doctors Employment Affairs provides strategic medical leadership for the integration, coordination, quality, and advancement of Resident Doctor training environments across VCH, British Columbia’s partner Health Authorities (HA) and affiliated academic institutions, recognizing the dual nature of Resident Doctors as employees of VCH for the employment record and authorized clinical learners within VCH.
Reporting to the VP Medicine and Academic Affairs VCH, the role works in close partnership with provincial Health Authority leadership, VCH People team, academic institutions, operational leaders, physician educators, and Resident Doctors. In a dyad partnership with the Director, Resident Doctors Employment Affairs, the Medical Director provides strategic leadership to support alignment between healthcare delivery, postgraduate medical education, workforce planning, and Resident Doctor employment frameworks across British Columbia. Through this shared leadership of the Resident Doctors Employment Affairs Office (REAO), the Medical Director provides provincial medical leadership related to clinical training environments, physician engagement, Resident Doctors wellbeing, employment experience, and alignment between healthcare delivery systems and postgraduate medical education.
The role supports the development of a VCH coordinated and provincially integrated approach to Resident Doctor employment-related operational matters, while ensuring alignment with academic partners, patient safety principles, physician workforce priorities, and organizational strategic objectives.
The Medical Director serves as a senior physician advisor to provincial leadership and provides clinical and strategic oversight relating to Resident Doctors integration within healthcare delivery systems across VCH, and through HA partnerships across British Columbia. The Medical Director plays a key provincial leadership role in advancing the quality, consistency, safety, and integration of postgraduate medical education within British Columbia’s healthcare system. The role directly influences Resident Doctors’ experience, physician workforce sustainability, patient safety, and the future development of the physician workforce across the province.
This role operates within a model of shared accountability and partnership, recognizing the distributed nature of medical staff governance and the intersection with operational, academic, and corporate functions.
