Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is looking for a Regional Medical Director, Wellness, Health and Safety & Engagement (Medical Staff).
Reporting to the Vice President Medicine & Academic Affairs, the Regional Medical Director, Wellness, Health and Safety & Engagement provides medical leadership and expertise to advance the health, safety and wellness of medical staff and Credentialed Medical Providers (CMP) across Vancouver Coastal Health.
The Regional Medical Director serves as a trusted medical advisor, champion and advocate for wellness, health and safety initiatives affecting medical staff and CMP. Working in close partnership with the People team, the role brings a medical staff perspective to the design, refinement, implementation and evaluation of organizational programs, services and supports.
The role promotes awareness, adoption and effective utilization of existing wellness, occupational health, safety and support services available through Vancouver Coastal Health People team programs, Doctors of BC and other provincial partners. The Regional Medical Director actively engages medical staff and CMP to identify emerging needs, barriers and opportunities for improvement, ensuring that organizational strategies and programs are responsive to the realities of medical practice environments.
Through collaboration with medical leaders, operational leaders, the People team and other internal and external partners, the Regional Medical Director supports the development of psychologically safe, healthy and inclusive practice environments and contributes to continuous improvement in the health, safety and wellness experience of medical staff. The Regional Medical Director provides medical leadership, consultation, advocacy and strategic advice to support these functions and ensure they effectively meet the needs of medical staff and CMP. Key Accountabilities
Medical Staff Wellness Advocacy
- Champions a culture of health, safety, wellness and psychological safety among medical staff and CMP.
- Promotes awareness, understanding and utilization of existing health, safety and wellness resources available through VCH People team programs, Doctors of BC and other provincial partners.
- Engages medical staff, CMP and medical leaders to identify emerging wellness concerns, barriers to access and opportunities for improvement.
- Acts as a visible advocate and trusted medical leader supporting wellness initiatives and healthy practice environments.
Strategic Partnership with the People Team
- Serves as the primary medical leadership partner to the People team Health, Safety, and Wellness portfolio on matters related to medical staff wellness, and occupational health and safety.
- Partners with People team Health, Safety, and Wellness programs by bringing the medical staff perspective to current and future strategies and design for medical staff occupational health and safety, and wellness programs and initiatives.
- Provides medical staff insight and expertise to inform organizational strategies, policies, programs and services.
- Supports the design, evaluation, and sustainment of strategies to prevent and address workplace violence, harassment and psychological harm, advancing psychologically safe and respectful medical practice environments. Acts as a key partner on internal VCH committees and initiatives such as the tiered violence project.
- Collaborates with People leaders to ensure initiatives are practical, relevant and responsive to the unique needs of medical staff and CMP.
- Identifies gaps and informs the design and optimization of current processes, services and systems to support medical staff. Provides medical staff input on related policies and decision support tools.
- Supports implementation and change management efforts by fostering medical staff engagement and adoption.
Program Design, Improvement and Advisory Services
- Provides advice and support in the development, refinement and evaluation of wellness, occupational health and safety programs affecting medical staff and CMP.
- Identifies gaps, risks and opportunities within existing services, processes and supports. Facilitates communication and engagement between medical staff, medical leadership and VCH corporate partners including People team, Legal Services, Risk Management, and Analytics.
- Recommends improvements informed by medical staff experience, evidence-based research, leading practices and emerging trends.
- Supports the development of metrics and feedback mechanisms to evaluate effectiveness and inform continuous improvement.
- Through the VP Medicine & Academic Affairs, transparent reporting to the VCH Board of Directors by identifying, monitoring, and escalating enterprise risks related to medical staff wellness, occupational health and safety.
Medical Leadership and Medical Staff Engagement
- Engages Senior Medical Directors, Department Heads, Medical Directors, and other medical leaders to promote a culture of wellness, psychological safety, respect, and healthy workplace practices across medical practice environments.
- Advises medical leadership and organizational partners on emerging trends, risks, and leading practices related to medical staff wellness, engagement, psychological health and safety, and healthy workplace culture, informing organizational priorities and improvement initiatives.
- Partners with medical leaders to identify emerging wellness concerns, workplace challenges, and opportunities to strengthen the experience, engagement, and well-being of medical staff and CMP.
- Supports medical leaders in understanding, promoting, and facilitating access to organizational and provincial wellness, health, and safety resources, to increase awareness, utilization, and early intervention for medical staff and CMP.
External Partnerships and System Leadership
- Maintains relationships with Doctors of BC, medical schools, health authority partners and provincial wellness leaders.
- Shares leading practices and contributes to provincial committees and discussions regarding medical staff wellness, and occupational health and safety.
- Represents VCH on committees, initiatives and forums related to medical staff wellness and psychological health and safety as appropriate.
- In close partnership with VCH People team and Indigenous Health, ensures compliance with VCH and regulatory standards related to occupational health and safety, psychological safety, and respectful workplace, while partnering with Indigenous Health championing the advancement of Indigenous cultural safety and the integration of Indigenous health priorities
- Promotes a culture of continuous quality improvement. Ensures compliance with accreditation standards, ethical practices, and legislative and regulatory requirements, taking corrective action as necessary.
