As a Health Unit Worker with VCH you will:

  • Support the community health programs/centres/clinics by:
    • maintaining inventories of various medical/surgical, biological supplies and harm reduction resources
    • setting up and dismantling clinic areas,
    • cleaning and disinfecting equipment,
    • and assembling and preparing education packages for clients.
  • Perform other related administrative support functions as required.
  • Establish, maintain and enhance client interactions based on respect.
  • Acts as a receptionist by answering the telephone, greeting visitors, determining the nature of call/visit, taking and/or relaying messages and/or providing general information about the program, services and/or other community resources
  • Assists with communication strategies including resources and communication bulletin boards.
  • Schedule/arrange appointments/bookings for clients.


Education & Experience

  • Grade 12
  • Medical Office Assistant Certificate and one (1) year recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid B.C. Driver's license and local area travel requiring the use of a vehicle may be required.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Knowledge of nursing equipment.
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of health care facilities/clinics practices and procedures.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Ability to keyboard 5,000 strokes per hour.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients.
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
  • Knowledge of general office procedures
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
