As a People Health Advisor with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Utilize a medical case management model to assess, coordinate, and support employees throughout their work absences due to occupational and non-occupational illness or injury in a safe and timely manner. This includes early intervention, service coordination, referrals, management of long-term disability and WorkSafe BC cases, evaluation of treatment plans, and oversight of rehabilitation programs to implement cost-effective strategies that minimize absenteeism and facilitate early return-to-work or stay at work.
  • Maintain a high level of support for employees participating in disability management through frequent communication and collaboration with the employee and their care providers in developing goals and objectives compatible to the employee’s disability, monitoring progress, communicating and collaborating with managers and union representatives.
  • Promote best practices in disability management through communication, provision of expert advice and training of employees, managers, union representatives, HR Advisors and others, as appropriate.
  • Maintain full medical confidentiality within the scope of VCH’s Policy and Freedom and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA).
  • Follow established guidelines and standards of practice.
  • Assess employees’ fitness for work based on bona fide medical and functional information.
  • In collaboration with the employee and their care provider(s), develop individualized plans that facilitate return to work or stay at work within their functional abilities.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the field of disability management through the review of literature as well as liaising with appropriate professional groups.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records of all employees enrolled in the disability management program.
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a health discipline such as Kinesiology, Psychology or Disability Management plus five (5) years recent related experience in a unionized health care environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Disability Management certificate (National Institute of Disability Management and Research (not required but an asset).

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Demonstrated and working knowledge of disability management principles and practice
  • Working knowledge of relevant regulations and legislation including WSBC, Human Rights, FOIPPA and application of collective agreements.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
  • Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.
  • Ability to effectively manage and maintain positive working relationships within a unionized environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively negotiate and influence.
  • Ability to strategically analyse and problem solve.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Ability to work and adapt within an environment subject to continuously changing priorities.
  • Proficient current computer literacy including Excel, Power Point, Word
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
