As an Emergency LPN at Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Work closely with the care teams in both acute care and community services by acting as a liaison between the acute care team and community care services to facilitate expedited care and discharge planning from the acute care facility to the appropriate service in the community.
  • Participate in direct care activities such as assessing, screening, implementing, evaluating interventions, and coordinating health services for the designated stable and/or predictable medical frail elderly population in the Emergency Department (ED).
  • Support discharge and/or care planning, act as a patient advocate and teach patients and their families about illness/injury, overall health promotion and wellness.
  • Enhance quality of life from the perspective of the patient/family.
  • Establish, maintain and enhance a trauma informed approach to create therapeutic relationships based on respect.
  • Provide care to patients and their families based on stable and/or predictable states of health by initiating and following established plans of care under the direction/supervision/guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Recognize and respond to unexpected patient outcomes by communicating and collaborating with other members of the healthcare team.
  • Document care provided and respond to incidents in accordance with established policies, procedures and Emergency Department expectations.
  • Consult, confer, and collaborate with other health care providers as needed.


Education & Experience

  • Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

  • One (1) year recent related acute care, Long Term Care and/or community-based clinical experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge and practice within the standards dictated by the BCCNM for Licensed Practical Nurses.

  • Demonstrated ability in dealing with a variety of situations and responsibilities requiring initiative, creativity and professional judgment.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care.

  • Knowledge and experience in providing culturally safe and competent care specifically pertaining to an indigenous population.

  • Broad knowledge of community resources and polices.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply decision-making and analytical skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize priorities in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with patients and their families.

  • Ability to observe and recognize changes in patient’s health state.

  • Ability to independently deal with a variety of situations and responsibilities requiring initiative, creativity and professional judgment.

  • Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications

  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.

As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Officer Order and the Health Sector Order), as of October 26, 2021, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
