Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Environmental Health Scientist to join the Environmental Health Team. 

 

As a Environmental Health Scientist with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Provide expert review, analysis and advice to the organization’s Health Protection team in the assessment, investigation, and policy development regarding environmental impacts to human health.
  • Work closely with the Medical Health Officer, Environmental Health
  • Use critical thinking and analytical skills to synthesize information from a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines to provide evidence based advice and recommendations for the development and ongoing consideration of Vancouver Coastal Health’s (VCH) environmental health policies and practices for assigned topics and issues. The assigned environmental health topics or issues may be controversial with diverse public expectations, and often in the context of limited available information.
  • Use expertise in knowledge synthesis and translation to provide technical leadership to the VCH Health Protection team in assisting the Chief Medical Health Officer in developing evidence based risk management and risk communication approaches for responding to these challenging issues.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • A level of education, training, and experience equivalent at a minimum to a PhD in a discipline related to Environmental Health.
  • Five (5) years’ of recent, related experience.
  • Experience in a health or environmental protection agency at the regional, provincial, or federal level an asset.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the principles of epidemiology, environmental toxicology, risk analysis, risk management, risk communication, population health determinants, health equity, population health measurement, and health impact assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to use established scientific evidence evaluation frameworks to critically appraise complex research findings from scientific literature and other lines of evidence to accomplish timely knowledge translation in a succinct and practical approach.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate relevant information from a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines as required.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills with a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to quickly read and review large amounts of written documents (such as environmental impact assessments) and identify key issues for further analysis.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team as well as independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally and respectfully with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work, work under time constraints to meet deadlines; handle interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated superior level of accuracy, attention to detail, and independent error checking.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to utilize related equipment and tools including a variety of computerized software packages such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database , GIS, and internet applications at an advanced level.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate and research information on-line (internet and intranet).
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
