The  Advisor, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of strategies and initiatives for VCH Diversity, Equity & Inclusion priority actions in support of delivering on our organizational commitment for a culturally safe, inclusive, and equitable VCH.
Reporting to the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,  the Advisor will work closely with the DEI Coalition, Corporate Communications, and Public Affairs teams to engage staff and medical staff and external partners to build awareness and knowledge around DEI, advance cultural competence, and foster systemic change and measurable outcomes through tailored programs, initiatives, tools and training.
As a change agent who inspires others, the Advisor plays the roles of catalyst, advisor, collaborator and educator, working with all VCH departments, services and programs to develop partnerships, adopt new practices and inspire others. The Advisor will bring demonstrated experience in diversity, accessibility, inclusion and employment equity program creation, implementation and evaluation, drawing on their exceptional communications, change and project management, learning and development, and evaluation skills.

As an Advisor, DEI with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Implements the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion priority actions by engaging with governance teams, stakeholders and leaders.
  • Manages stakeholder relationships, prepares communications to stakeholders and responds to stakeholder enquiries.
  • Collaborates and engages internal partners through influence and relationship-building to ensure alignment between the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion priority actions and other related initiatives across the organization.
  • Leads the planning and development of DEI initiatives and programs. 
  • Identifies and builds strong external relationships and partnerships with community organizations and thought leaders in order to enrich the inclusion literacy and cultural competency of VCH staff and medical staff.
  • Identifies, creates and implements solutions and initiatives to address systemic bias and organizational barriers for equity-seeking groups
  • Contributes to the engagement, belonging, and retention of equity-seeking groups. 
  • Provides senior advisory services and consultation to leaders throughout VCH utilizing strong communication skills and the ability to persuade and influence.
  • Prepares evaluation reports and presentations by gathering, analyzing, and summarizing information from stakeholders, databases and research, and makes recommendations on program improvements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Communications, Public Relations, Social Sciences, Public Health, or Business Administration
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years’ experience in diversity, equity and inclusion stakeholder engagement, program and project management, change management, organization development, training and education, and conducting program evaluations or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Lived experience with diversity, inclusion and equity considerations.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Proven experience in managing initiatives with diverse stakeholder groups in complex, sometimes ambiguous and decentralized organizations
  • Proven experience in the development and delivery of diversity, equity and inclusion programming
  • Proven experience working with unionized employees and/or engaging with unions
  • Strong understanding of change management, project management and communication key principles and best practices to develop and oversee large scale change initiatives. Applies change management methodologies in the design and development of various programs, frameworks and tools.
  • Sound knowledge of federal and provincial human rights and employment policy and legislation relevant to diversity, inclusion and equity.
  • Strong project management, prioritization and planning skills in the design and delivery of diversity, inclusion and equity programs.
  • Superior writing, speaking, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Applies superior judgment and political expertise to communicate sensitive information to, and collaborate with, a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Uses superior team building, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills to facilitate critical thinking and problem resolution.
  • Fosters creativity, innovation, and systems thinking in strategic planning involving cultural shifts and large scale change initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate workshops, meetings, and events with multi-level and multidisciplinary staff to achieve effective outcomes.
  • Plays a consultative and facilitator role for internal teams on topics such as inclusive leadership, unconscious bias, equity, dimensions of diversity, and social identity.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Officer Order and the Health Sector Order), as of October 26, 2021, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
