General surgical oncologist with subspecialty interest in complex pelvic malignancies.  Expectations for academic productivity, teaching medical students, general surgery residents and surgical oncology fellows and coverage of acute care surgery call. 

 

The Division of General Surgery at Vancouver General Hospital invites applications for a full-time general surgical oncology position with a focus on complex and locally advanced pelvic malignancy beginning July 1, 2026.

 

The successful candidate will join the Division of General Surgery at the University of British Columbia with a clinical practice at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and the University of British Columbia Hospital (UBCH). VGH is the quaternary referral center for the province of British Columbia. The Division includes 22 general surgeons with areas of expertise in trauma, acute care surgery, surgical oncology, abdominal wall reconstruction, complex gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary and transplant surgery.

Elective clinical responsibilities will include directing clinical care and surgical management of patients within all aspects of surgical oncology including breast, cutaneous, soft tissue and gastrointestinal malignancies. Additional training in the management of locally advanced pelvic tumors requiring pelvic side wall, sacral and/or multivisceral resection is favored. Endoscopy privileges can be granted if desired as part of the practice. Multidisciplinary engagement will be expected with specialties, including but not limited to medical and radiation oncology and plastic, urologic, orthopedic and spine surgery. Participation in the Acute Care Surgery service and general surgery call at VGH will be expected.

 

Academic expectations include contributing to developing a collaborative program that provides patient centered care. Engagement in database development, patient reported outcomes, and an integrated care model is encouraged. The candidate will have demonstrated academic productivity through peer-reviewed publications and contribution to national and international conference proceedings as well as experience in advanced research methodology and statistical analysis.

 

The candidate will be a member of an integrated practice unit (IPU) for complex pelvic oncology within VGH and contribute to building a multidisciplinary infrastructure for optimizing patient experience and outcomes for surgical oncology patients. The candidate will participate in training general surgery residents and surgical oncology fellows as well as teaching medical students.

The candidate will be expected to have completed a residency program in general surgery and fellowship training in complex general surgical oncology. They must be eligible for licensure in the province of British Columbia. Applicants with graduate degrees (Masters or PhD) are preferred.

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – Desired
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) – Desired
  • Current College of Physicians of BC (CPSBC) – Full
  • Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) – Mandatory
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) – Mandatory
  • Surgical Skills – Mandatory
