Come work as a Family Practice – Inpatient Care and Emergency Medicine Physician with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

This position is for a permanent full-time Family Practice - Emergency physician beginning as soon as possible, to provide a combination of Inpatient Care Coverage and ER shift coverage at Sechelt Hospital.

The Family Practice (Inpatient Care) role includes the admission of new, unassigned, and unattached patients through the Emergency Department (ED); comprehensive patient rounding and stabilization at the end of the day; and responding to urgent, non-code calls for patients admitted to the site. Successful applicants will join a new group of Inpatient Care physicians and participate in an on-call rotation, which is approximately 1:2 for on call, with 5-7 day work weeks. Candidates should have a strong interest in integrating and developing their acute care/inpatient care practice within the Sechelt Hospital team.  Remuneration for your activities within the inpatient care services will be through the Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) payment model.

The ER role would include a minimum of 4 ER shifts per month, encompassing a variety of shift hours as required (including 8-15; 11-19, 15-22; 22-8), with an additional 2 “Sick Call” shifts per month providing 24-hour availability for coverage of a colleague on short-notice, or to attend to major events requiring an additional physician.

The intention would be to shift between these roles on a week-by-week basis, with sufficient flexibility to accommodate the needs of both the ER and inpatient care groups, and the successful candidate.  This would average >30 hours per week and constitute full-time work in our community.

Sechelt Hospital is a 63-bed acute care facility located on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Serving over 33,000 year-round residents, the region has the second-largest proportion of seniors in BC. Sechelt Hospital provides a comprehensive range of health-care services to the community, ensuring access to quality care close to home.  All patients are admitted under a Family Physician as MRP, with excellent on-site consultant support (including Internal Medicine, General Surgery, OB-GYN, Psychiatry and Ophthalmology).

Key services include 24/7 emergency care, inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures, inpatient medical and psychiatric care, a regional renal program with community dialysis units, and a variety of Mental Health and Substance Use Services. The hospital also offers regional laboratory medicine and a full suite of imaging services, including CT scans, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, mammography, and general radiology (X-ray), as well as intervention radiology procedures. Patients benefit from on-site rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy, as well as surgical services and birthing support for low-risk pregnancies. Additionally, Sechelt Hospital delivers chemotherapy for cancer patients and offers outpatient medical day care services, providing a wide scope of care in a welcoming, community-focused setting.

The hospital provides acute surgical, medical and obstetrical inpatient/outpatient services supported by laboratory, diagnostic imaging (including CT) and rehabilitation services.  It is also home to a 4-bed critical care unit.
