Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is deeply committed to engagement and ensuring the healthcare services we deliver reflect the diverse and evolving needs of the communities we care for. To this end, VCH is seeking a Coordinator, Community Engagement to assist with a quality improvement project aimed at improving serious illness conversations with people experiencing health and social inequities and living in the DTES. The Learning What Matters: Care Planning in the Context of Inequities project is a collaboration between PHC and VCH with funding from Healthcare Excellence Canada.

 

As a Community Engagement Coordinator, IEAPC Project with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Bring together health and social care groups serving people in the DTES as well as people with lived and living experience to identify challenges in learning about and sharing the care preferences of people experiencing inequities and living with a serious illness (including use of alcohol and illicit drugs) and to facilitate the co-creation of solutions.
  • Facilitate discussion about ways to improve communication and collaboration between teams and organizations providing health and social care services in the DTES, including housing, through the convening of a community table.
  • Plan, assist in the execution of engagement tactics, help collate and report on feedback from participating teams and programs, as well as provide project management, coordination and administrative support to the project team, as required.
  • Engage interested parties and community partners to ensure their voices help to shape best practices in learning about and sharing care preferences of people experiencing inequities, which leads to more person-centered care, improved quality of care, and ultimately better healthcare outcomes for this population.
  • Be aware of current trends and best practices in community engagement and communications, particularly with application to a complex organizational context and partner landscape.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in community engagement, community capacity building, or a health-related discipline, and/or a university degree in community development, communications, public relations, community planning, marketing or another relevant discipline and or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in working with and/or supporting people living with health and social inequities, particularly in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, and demonstrated understanding of the challenges these people experience, is essential.
  • Knowledge of or experience working or volunteering in or with service providing agencies in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver would be an asset.
  • Experience with or certification in Indigenous cultural safety and trauma informed practice would be an asset.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Demonstrated basic knowledge and skills in principles and practices of community engagement, stakeholder relations, public participation or relevant subject areas.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, coordination and administration.
  • Demonstrated experience in qualitative interviews, qualitative research, analysis and writing reports.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
  • Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.
  • Demonstrated creative outlook and ability to problem solve.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, establish priorities, meet deadlines and work on a number of different initiatives concurrently in a deadline-oriented, high-profile and demanding environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and creatively, both orally and in writing, within tight time frames.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to use standard office and communications technologies.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
