The Digital Communications Leader is responsible for leading Vancouver Coastal Health’s (VCH) social media strategy, digital content creation, community management and executing digital public health campaigns. This role ensures VCH’s digital presence effectively engages with external and internal audiences, amplifies key messages and fosters meaningful connections with staff and medical staff, patients, stakeholders and the public.

 

The Digital Communications Leader is a resourceful, creative, and care-focused individual who balances strategic thinking with hands-on execution. The role requires a deep understanding of social media and content trends, digital storytelling and audience engagement, along with the ability to guide and mentor a junior team member. The leader will oversee the organizations social media channels, manage a Digital Communications Coordinator, and work collaboratively with various teams to develop compelling digital content, ensuring brand consistency and leveraging analytics to optimize content and channel performance.

This is a hybrid role, based in Vancouver, BC. 

 

As a Digital Communications Leader with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Develop and implement social media strategies aligned with VCH’s vision, values, and strategic priorities, ensuring consistent messaging and engagement across all digital platforms.
  • Lead the creation of high-quality digital content, including social media posts, videos, graphics, and other multimedia assets that resonate with key audiences.
  • Oversee community management, ensure timely responses to inquiries, proactive engagement with followers, and the management of sensitive conversations in collaboration with internal teams.
  • Plan and execute digital public health campaigns that support key health initiatives, increasing awareness, education, and engagement.
  • Manage and mentor adesignated staff, provide guidance, professional development, and clear direction on content creation and digital engagement.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including communications, public affairs, and clinical experts, to ensure digital content aligns with organizational priorities and public health messaging.
  • Monitor and analyze social media and digital campaign performance, leverage insights to refine strategies, optimize content, and enhance audience engagement.
  • Stay current with digital and social media trends, best practices, and emerging technologies to ensure VCH’s digital presence remains relevant and effective.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors and agencies supporting digital initiatives, ensuring value for money and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Support crisis communications efforts by providing timely and effective digital responses during public health emergencies or other events.
  • Ensure all digital content adheres to accessibility and privacy standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Digital Media or a related discipline, and/or five (5) to ten (10) years of experience in digital communications, social media management or content marketing, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Experience leading social media strategies, digital content creation, and online community engagement.

  • Strong understanding of digital advertising, audience targeting, and paid social media strategies.

  • Demonstrated experience managing social media crises, monitoring online sentiment, and responding effectively to public inquiries.

  • Expertise in analytics tools, including social media insights and Google Analytics, to measure impact and inform decision-making.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with an ability to translate complex health topics into engaging digital content.

  • Experience managing and mentoring team members, fostering professional growth and collaboration.

  • Experience with hands-on social content creation including designing graphics and video production would be an asset.

  • Being comfortable in-front of and behind the camera would be an asset

  • Advanced experience with community management tools, content management systems, graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Sprout Social, Trello).

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders.

  • Deep knowledge of social media platforms, algorithms, and best practices for content creation and community engagement.

  • Experience in running paid digital campaigns, including social media advertising and influencer partnerships.

  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.

  • Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.

  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
