Come work as Acute Care Surgery (ACS) Surgeon with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

 

The Acute Care Surgery service located at Richmond Hospital provides general acute surgery services to the patient population in Richmond.

 

The ACS surgeon is responsible for the effective care, treatment and surgery of patients while on call, liaising with different departments including but not limited to ED, Internal Medicine, Hospitalist, Medical Imagining, Oncology, Nursing and Allied Health.

 

In addition, this position will have the opportunity to provide care for urgent follow up patients discharged from the ED in the ACS Rapid Access Clinic which will operate 5 times per week on site.

 

This role will be Privileged within the Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery and will only provide ACS services while scheduled for ACS Services specifically. This role will not be given nor eligible for elective Operating Room time for private practice waitlists. The position is expected a minimum of 8 weeks of service per year as part of your privileges.

 

Richmond Hospital is a fully accredited and equipped community teaching hospital with 210 acute beds serving Vancouver International Airport, BC Ferries and a growing community of 215,000. It is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of British Columbia and has a Level 3 trauma centre classification in its Emergency Department. The hospital has a wide range of medical services for the community including a diabetic centre, cancer clinic, exercise stress testing, pulmonary function lab, polysomnography lab, cardiac and respiratory rehabilitation, EEG, EMG, medical clinics and a vibrant research program. Patients are supported by the availability of a closed ICU, a high acuity unit, an ACE unit (acute care for the elderly) and palliative care unit. The hospital is in the design stage for a new acute care tower which will bring 100 new acute beds to the hospital by 2026.

 

As Acute Care Surgery (ACS) Surgeon with Vancouver Coastal Health, you will:

  • Provide ACS Surgery services while scheduled for ACS Services including ER consults, ward consults, urgent/emergent surgeries and ongoing follow up of inpatients.
  • Work in the ACS Rapid Access Clinic with program support to see urgent consults referred from the ED and follow up of post discharge patients from the ACS Services.
  • Functioning in a coordinated manner with other General Surgeons providing services across RH/VCH.
  • Maintain current bylaws, regulations, and policies for physicians.
  • Provide leadership in the Operating Room to other physicians, nursing, allied health, and operations.
  • Ensure the timely and effective communications between admin, OR staff, allied health and other Departments
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team planning for ongoing health needs of surgical patients at RH.
  • Participation in the evaluation of the efficiency, quality and delivery of the Services, including and without limiting the generality of the foregoing, participation in medical audits, peer and interdisciplinary reviews, chart reviews, and incident report reviews.

Qualifications

Education, Licensing, & Experience:

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - Desired
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) - Desired
  • Current College of Physicians of BC (CPSBC) License - Full
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) - Mandatory
  • Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) - Mandatory
  • Emergency Experience - Desired
