As a Waste Quality Assurance Educator/Auditor, Waste Management with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Work in partnership with multiple partners across Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and is responsible for monitoring and reporting on organizational waste handling procedures, including biomedical and laboratory chemical wastes.
  • Work with organizational program and unit leaders and staff to strive to standardize waste handling practices, improve waste segregation through staff education and reduce associated waste disposal costs.
  • Serve as an expert on waste segregation and handling hazardous waste and will develop synergies with other waste management processes.
  • Work on a team with the Regional Contract Manager and the Support Services Manager to lead the development of organization-wide policies in compliance with all relevant federal and provincial regulations.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Grade 12, plus successful completion of a recognized program in the field of environmental or waste management.
  • Five (5) years of experience in environmental and waste management, including experience in managing third party contracts in a health care setting or similar large institution, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of applicable Federal, Provincial and Municipal legislation, regulations and bylaws pertaining to environmental protection and waste management.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare environmental practices and standards and body substance precautions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
  • Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.
  • Sound understanding of quality assurance systems.
  • Ability to resolve issues in a customer service environment, tactfully and equitably, with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle stressful situations in a consistent and positive manner.
  • Effective presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving and dispute resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective computer skills, including various word processing software and spreadsheet programs.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
