Come work as an Emergency Physician with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!
Squamish General Hospital Emergency Department (SGH ED) is seeking 2-3 locum physicians to work in the Emergency Department. The positions will be a mix of weekend, daytime and night shifts. There will be opportunities to pick up additional shifts. Shifts are remunerated on a fee for service basis through MSP, and there are additional funds through the Medical On call Availability Program (MOCAP) and Rural Emergency Enhancement Fee (REEF). These positions may be eligible for Rural Program funding, which is adjudicated on a case-by-case basis by the Ministry of Health.
Squamish General Hospital ED services a population of 24,000 with a 13 bed emergency department. The emergency physician also cross covers the acute medical inpatient unit and an adjoining long term care facility for emergency issues. The ED has approximately 20,000 visits per year. Currently the schedule has 3 shifts per day, all single physician coverage, however, this summer we will be trialing a 4th shift with double coverage during peak hours. Lab, x-ray and ultrasound are available on site; specialist consultation and CT are available at Lions Gate Hospital, which is a 45 minute EHS transfer from Squamish Hospital. Squamish Hospital is a level 5 rural trauma center, with no general surgery or internal medicine available onsite. Anesthesia back-up is available 24 hours/day.
The ideal applicants are excellent communicators who work well within a small team of nurses, physicians and allied health practitioners, who are passionate about delivering high quality Emergency Medicine care in a rural setting, and who are committed to ongoing skill development. Squamish is a growing community with expanding health care needs; a commitment to the broader local medical community as a whole is valued. Living locally is an asset to be able to assist with urgent call-outs.
Applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC and have obtained a CCFP and have experience in Emergency Medicine in a similar setting or have completed additional training in Emergency Medicine; either the CCFP EM program or FRCP, or have obtained EM certification through successfully challenging the CCFP EM examination, or have completed an enhanced skills program such as the Nanaimo Emergency Education Program or similar. Interested applicants should provide covering letter along with C.V.
Preference will be given to candidates who reside within the Squamish area and those who have more than 5 years of rural emergency medicine experience.
