Job Summary

Reporting to the Director, Medical Imaging, the Manager, Clinical Education, Specialty Medical Imaging leads the development and management of a regional Clinical Education Strategy that will enable and facilitate the current and ongoing development/growth needs of Medical Imaging leaders, educators and clinical staff., The Manager leads the advancement of medical imaging professions by integrating clinical and professional standards and education and provides educational leadership, consultation and assistance to the MI program by establishing initiatives designed to support education and learning.


The Manager collaborates with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders including Directors, Managers, the People team, Provincial education strategy committees, and Profession-specific practice leaders by providing leadership and direction for professional and interprofessional education programs, professional development and supporting organizational initiatives such as new grad programming, employed student program and other recruitment and retention initiatives. As a Manager, Clinical Education - Specialty Medical Imaging with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Contribute to the overall leadership in clinical education and professional development in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision, values and strategic direction by fostering a climate of continued learning and growth, and encouraging and supporting a variety of educational programs and strategies. Provide leadership and mentoring to regional MI clinical educators to foster a culture that recognizes and responds to issues through coaching, team building and resource identification.
  • Manage the recruitment, mentoring, selection and professional development of assigned staff. Supervise designated staff, determine staff schedules, and provide work direction and assignment of duties to meet operational requirements. Conduct employee performance reviews, coaching sessions and the facilitation of goal setting with the employee including the identification of educational/training requirements.
  • Implement employee discipline up to and including termination, as necessary.
  • Lead the development of a student education framework for MI in collaboration with Regional MI Clinical Educators, Regional Professional Practice Leaders, directors, educational institutions and professional associations & colleges by participating on educational committees internal and external to the health authority. Make recommendations on numbers of seats required to the Executive Director, Medical Imaging to inform provincial planning and labour strategies.
  • Identify clinical education goals and objectives and ensure sound ethical educational practices to advance clinical education practices. Advise educational institutions (e.g. BCIT) on the academic programs that support medical imaging to ensure that the didactic and clinical curriculum meets the national certification competency profile and reflects current clinical practice.
  • Oversee and facilitate the clinical teaching component of the program. Work in collaboration with education institutions to ensure that the annual student intake reflects future work force requirements for medical imaging in B.C.
  • Lead the development of an Educational Strategy to support the clinical transition throughout the course of a career for MI staff with support from the Director of Quality & Informatics, the Regional Clinical Educators, and Regional Professional Practice Leaders.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement multiple education delivery platforms or methods for medical imaging that are current, easily accessible, and support the educational needs of educators and students in MI. Support and implement education and evaluation strategies to support MI Clinical Educators and Clinical Instructors across MI to ensure key educational objectives are met and are observable. Ensure regular quality reviews of education pathways and processes. Provide guidance and execute necessary adaptations and change to meet the ongoing needs of the MI.
  • Act as a resource and consultant for provincial and national medical radiation technologist and sonographer planning in medical imaging and advanced clinical practice approaches at the program, organizational, community, provincial, national and international levels.
  • Execute project plans according to project management methodologies by ensuring systems and processes are in place, engaging stakeholders and ensuring the organization is ready for project implementation. Provide leadership to project teams as appropriate and in accordance with the agreed charter, and ensure the successful and coordinated completion of all tasks, processes, contractual arrangements and material requirements of the project.
  • Provide leadership for a wide range of projects designed to address operational goals and vision such as inter-professional collaborative practice education strategies, new technology integration, educator professional development, new graduate programs, front line leader education and support strategies, professional development for current and emerging leaders, employed student program and others.
  • Advise and make recommendations to the Regional Director of Quality and Informatics and the Executive Director of LMMI regarding trends and opportunities to advance discipline specific and inter-professional collaborative education or maintain sustainability of the professional workforce.
  • Work closely with the Professional Practice team, Departments of Learning and Development, Quality, Safety & Risk Management, Academic Planning, Post-Secondary Institutions, Clinical Informatics, clinical programs and other groups on special projects to address issues, educational needs and retention strategies.
  • Participate in the Regional Professional Practice and Clinical Education budget processes with the Regional Director Quality and Informatics.
  • Develop specific proposals related to Clinical education needs, and explore opportunities for revenue generation with educational programs and materials.
  • Develop and implement an annual operating and capital budget for the assigned area of responsibility; responsible for monitoring expenditures, variance analysis and reporting; implement corrective action as required.
  • Support the development, implementation and consistent application of policies, procedures, clinical practice guidelines, and professional practice standards related to education for medical imaging in partnership with clinical educators, professional practice and operations.
  • Participate in communication/committee work. Chair and participate in cross-organizational and provincial meetings as required.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Master’s Degree in an Education, Health Administration, Leadership, or other relevant program, plus seven (7) years’ recent, related experience in a complex health environment, including progressive clinical education, and education program planning and delivery experience and two (2) years’ supervisory/leadership experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Current practicing registration/membership with the applicable professional College/Association.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle for business-related purposes.

  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility and Anti-Racism in all educational activities.
  • Fosters creativity and innovation in strategic planning involving learning and development and in the development of teaching and learning strategies.
  • Applies superior oral and written communication abilities in the design and composition of creative high quality, interactive learning materials.
  • Superior process design and project management abilities applied in the design and development of learning and development initiatives.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
