Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Director, People Health & Wellness to join the team.

As a key leader within the People team and reporting to the Vice President of People, the Director of Health & Wellness plays a strategic and operationally integral role within the organization. This senior leadership position is responsible for aligning Wellness and Workability programs with the broader organizational objectives, ensuring these programs meet the needs of staff, volunteers, and leaders. The Director oversees the design, implementation, and integration of a holistic Wellness and Workability portfolio, including the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), comprehensive Mental and Physical Health & Wellness initiatives, the Psychological Health & Safety program, and the Workability framework, aimed at supporting optimal employee engagement and workplace effectiveness.

 

The Director is a thought leader, ensuring these programs not only comply with current legislation and standards but also embody the organization’s commitment to health, safety, and inclusivity. This includes advancing strategic objectives in Indigenous cultural safety, anti-racism, and equity. Through collaboration with other senior leaders, this role champions innovative approaches and data-driven evaluation to proactively enhance the organization’s Wellness and Workability services.

 

The Director utilizes exceptional relationship management skills to foster strong relationships with other senior leaders, counterparts within other Health Authorities, the Ministry of Health, provincial workplace Health & Wellness committees, Health Human Resources initiatives, HEABC, health sector unions, and other related provincial committees and governing bodies.

As a Director, People Health & Wellness with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Drive the development, implementation, and continuous enhancement of the People Wellness and Workability portfolio to align with the organization’s strategic objectives and executive leadership directives. Utilize industry insights and predictive analysis to anticipate future needs, set priorities, and recommend strategic initiatives that elevate the employee experience.
  • Oversee and integrate the full suite of services within the People Health & Wellness and Workability portfolio, including EFAP, Health & Wellness initiatives, Psychological Health & Safety, and Workability programs. This includes conducting comprehensive evaluations to ensure program effectiveness and alignment with the organization’s strategic direction and Safety, Health & Wellness plan.
  • Establish and sustain high-impact relationships with key stakeholders, including internal and external partners such as Labour Relations, Indigenous Health, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, WorkSafeBC, EFAP providers, HEABC and health care unions. Through these collaborations, identify and implement solutions that foster a safe and supportive work environment in compliance with legislation, regulations, and collective agreements.
  • Provide organizational leadership in the development, application, and interpretation of policies, procedures, and compliance with legislative requirements, collective agreements, and national standards, including Canada’s National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety.
  • Leverage knowledge of healthcare workplace to design, implement, and oversee evidence-based Health & Wellness programs that address mental, physical, and psychological health needs across the organization. Applies health sector knowledge to assess staff needs, implement best practices in health promotion, and evaluate the efficacy of initiatives such as the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), Psychological Health & Safety programs, and Return-to-Work strategies.
  • Utilize clinical data and health metrics to shape program development, ensure targeted support for staff, and inform leadership decision-making. Coordinates with interdisciplinary team leaders and external providers to deliver specialized services, optimizing outcomes for employees facing health challenges.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Education & Experience

  • Degree in Nursing or related healthcare profession supplemented with a relevant graduate degree in a discipline such as Behavioral Health, Nursing, or Psychology, and professional experience in clinical nursing practice plus ten (10) years' recent, relevant, progressive leadership experience in healthcare/program management within a large multi-union organization or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
  • Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of clinical systems and healthcare management including health and safety management systems (HSMS), accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation and provincial/national standards on occupational health, safety, and disability management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the application of occupational health and safety concepts and practices.
  • Ability to effectively lead and support management teams, inspiring a shared vision that aligns with organization goals, objectives, and strategies.
  • Identifies emerging initiatives, trends and industry best practices and ensures full consideration in the development and implementation of service delivery goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong, positive relationships and utilizes strong communication skills and client-based solution-focused approach to finding creative and proactive ways for improving services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally, diplomatically, and persuasively to foster and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Uses strong leadership, strategic thinking, problem solving and innovation to develop effective strategies and ensure the attainment of goals and objectives.
  • Uses sound business acumen to manage fiscal resources of assigned programs/services in a manner that is financially responsible and consistent with the overall goals of the organization.
  • Continuously seeks to develop and improve service delivery standards and practices.
