Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Speech Language Pathologist to join the team working across Powell River, Bella Bella and Bella Coola in BC. Apply today to join our team!

 

As a Speech Language Pathologist with VCH you will:

  • Work without general supervision to assess, diagnose and treat the full range of communication and swallowing disorders for adult clients in home, acute and long term care facilities, community, clinic settings or virtually to clients in remote areas of the health authority.
  • Complete client reports, educate clients/family, provide counselling and consultation, and present lectures.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team rounds, risk management and research, and provide leadership to new employees and Speech-Language Pathology students.

ABOUT BELLA COOLA, BC

 

Bella Coola sits in a mountain valley at the head of the North Bentinck Channel, 500 km north of Vancouver, with a population of about 1800 people. The community is at the end of a long, truly magnificent fjord, on the mainland coast of British Columbia. Bella Coola General Hospital has 10 acute bed, 5 long term care beds and a 3 bed emergency department open 24/7, along with a laboratory, diagnostic imaging services, Telehealth, Mental Health, Public Health, Home & Community Support Services. Also within the hospital are a medical clinic and a pharmacy.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current full registration with the College of Speech and Hearing Professionals of British Columbia.
  • Three (3) years’ recent, related speech language practice dealing with adults with acquired communication disorders and dysphagia.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform clinical assessments either in person, or via virtual electronic/computerized methods.
  • Valid B.C. Driver’s License as local area travel requires the use of a vehicle, for which mileage will be reimbursed in accordance with the current collective agreement.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of evidence based practice.
  • Broad knowledge of other health disciplines and their role in healthcare.
  • Broad knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Sound knowledge base of neurological conditions, complex chronic diseases and acquired brain injury management.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer literacy and the ability to utilize current electronic and computerized equipment and applications in the course of duties.
  • Basic knowledge of adult education principles, methods and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and influence group and inter-group processes, decision-making and problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport with clients and families in order to explore issues that are beyond the initial presented concerns.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with clients, families, team members, other groups and community agency personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with conflict situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related computer equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to determine and deal effectively with urgent situations, clients/families/residents.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective consultation.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other healthcare professionals.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Skilled in the use of equipment, and in the techniques appropriate for treatment.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
