Job Summary

Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for an Occupational Therapist to join the Regional Pediatric Team working out of the Pacific Spirit Community Health Centre in Vancouver, BC.

As an Occupational Therapist with VCH, you will:

  • Provide occupational therapy services to a specific group of children (5 to 19 years of age) with physical, neurological and/or developmental challenges such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, difficulties with fine motor, written output, organization, attention and sensorimotor integration and those who require episodic or palliative care.
  • Coordinate the care for children with complex health care needs and collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, educational agencies and other health care professionals/providers/community agencies to achieve excellence in health services and education within the school, home and facility settings.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current full registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC).
  • Two (2) years’ recent related clinical experience with the designated client population including care management experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle for business-related purposes.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge in the assessment of developmental, sensory and/or motor problems.
  • Knowledge of feeding issues with children with neurological impairments.
  • Working knowledge of COTBC’s Essential Competencies of Practice for occupational therapy
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and provide interventions for children living with complex heath issues
  • General of knowledge Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safety care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
  • Working knowledge of complex family structures and issues associated with chronic health conditions and life-limiting illnesses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working within a family directed service philosophy.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a risk management approach and ethical decision- making principles to complex family and complex health situations.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with care management theory, diversity and multicultural health care practice in working with children, families, care providers, professionals, special interest groups and the public.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of adult learning and group dynamics.
  • Working knowledge of facilitation, mediation and conflict resolution techniques and demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of standardized paediatric assessments.
  • Demonstrated teaching/training skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver in-service education sessions to lay and professional groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to prescribe and/or recommend a variety of self-help aids and rehabilitation equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain a variety of charts, records and reports related to work and to perform all duties with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan, organize and prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and to use a cooperative approach to program delivery.
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to deal with others tactfully, effectively, and respectfully
  • Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
