Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for an Occupational Therapist to join the Mental Health Rehabilitation team working out of the HOpe Centre in North Vancouver, BC. Apply today to join our team! 

 

As an Occupational Therapist with VCH, you will:

  • Provide occupational therapy services to enable adult and older adult clients to achieve and maintain optimal health outcomes, by working independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Perform assessments on client’s occupational performance utilizing an evidence-based approach.
  • Plan and implement outcome oriented services and evaluate the effectiveness of the services.
  • Act as a resource to support staff related to designated client rehabilitation plans and program planning.
  • Prepare and maintains record.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary research.
  • Demonstrate safe and effective resource utilization and quality management, and contribute to the development, review and promotion of occupational therapy services. 
  • As required, contribute to the organization and delivery of occupational therapy services, and participate in departmental/program quality improvement initiatives, meetings, research and education.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Degree in Occupational Therapy plus two (2) years’ recent related experience.
  • Current full registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC).
  • May require a valid B.C. Driver’s License. Local area travel may require the use of a personal vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care.
  • Knowledge of COTBC standards of practice and guidelines for clinical practitioners.
  • Knowledge of occupational theory and practice within a client/family centred model of care.
  • Demonstrated ability in dealing with a variety of situations and responsibilities requiring initiative, creativity and professional judgment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of a client and family centered recovery model in mental illness.
  • Knowledge and skills to provide care coordination to a select caseload of clients.
  • Knowledge of appropriate acts; e.g. Mental Health Act, Adult Guardianship, Public Health Act as it relates to the rights and obligations of clients and staff.
  • Knowledge and experience in providing culturally safe and competent care, specifically pertaining to Aboriginal people.
  • Knowledge and experience in Trauma Informed Practice, Harm Reduction and Recovery Oriented
    Care.
  • Broad knowledge of mental health illness and treatment.
  • Broad knowledge of substance abuse and addictions treatment.
  • Broad knowledge of other facilities and community resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide care planning, supportive counseling, crisis intervention, and case coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with clients and their
    families, colleagues, physicians, and other health care staff, both one-on-one and in groups. Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills that promotes communication and lead to a cooperative approach to problem solving within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust schedule to deal with unexpected situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide consultation and leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and use critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with conflict situations.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized client care information system and word processing, Internet and email software.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
