Job Summary

Come work as a Molecular Pathology Scientist with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

Working within the Division of Anatomical Pathology and reporting to the Medical Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, the Molecular Pathology Scientist is responsible for conducting advanced molecular analyses to aid in the diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic decision-making for various diseases, with a focus on cancer. Provides supervision of all molecular diagnostic assays in the laboratory, including development and validation of new assays, and monitoring of existing assay protocols. This role works closely with pathologists, laboratory staff, and clinical teams to provide comprehensive molecular pathology services, and supports laboratory accreditation by participating in laboratory quality assurance programs. The Molecular Pathology Scientist develops related protocols, procedures and policies for quality control and quality assurance and provides guidance and direction to technical staff regarding clinical matters. As a Molecular Pathology Scientist with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Perform and interpret complex molecular tests, with focus on genomic techniques.
  • Analyze and interpret molecular data to identify genetic mutations, alterations, and biomarkers relevant to patient diagnosis and treatment.
  • Triage, review, and interpret molecular assay results, with reporting to the Medical Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.
  • Supervise all molecular diagnostic assays in the laboratory.
  • Develop and validate new assays, monitor existing assay protocols, and ensure laboratory accreditation through administrative activities.
  • Participate in laboratory quality assurance programs to maintain high standards of diagnostic accuracy and reliability.
  • Participate in translational research projects to integrate molecular findings into clinical practice.
  • Collaborate with researchers on studies related to molecular pathology and contribute to scientific publications and presentations.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory protocols, quality control standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records and documentation.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and external quality assurance programs.
  • Work closely with pathologists, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals to discuss molecular findings and their clinical implications.
  • Provide expert consultation on molecular pathology results and assist in the interpretation of complex cases. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Mentor and train laboratory staff, residents, and fellows in molecular pathology techniques and principles.
  • Develop and deliver educational sessions and seminars on molecular pathology topics.
  • Participate in departmental research and teaching programs, including undergraduate and graduate students as well as resident training.
  • Represent the Division by participating in committee work, collaboration in health authority initiatives, and research.
  • Engage in administrative activities to support the operational and strategic goals of the laboratory.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • PhD degree in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics or related fields is required.
  • Clinical appointment at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (or eligibility for the same) may be applicable.
  • Three (3) years' recent, related experience in a clinical molecular pathology laboratory, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of research methodology in the context of development and testing of new methodologies for practical application in a clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated track record of developing and implementing molecular assays.
  • Demonstrated experience with high-throughput sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability in safe handling of biohazardous materials and exposure to chemical reagents. Strict adherence to safety protocols is required.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise and scientific judgment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in laboratory information systems and data analysis software.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, troubleshoot and problem solve clinical/research issues efficiently and resourcefully.
  • Advanced computer skills necessary to understand and utilize a variety of bioinformatics platforms and laboratory information systems and routine laboratory computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet or database technology.
  • Demonstrated skill and ability in techniques/procedures required for performing molecular biology in a complex laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to consult, teach and promote research in a clinical and continuing education environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
