Job Summary

Come work as a Parent/Family Engagement Cultural Diversity Specialist with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a graduate of a Social Services-related Bachelor Degree program to join the Youth Alcohol and Drug team in Vancouver, BC as a Parent/Family Engagement Cultural Diversity Specialist.

 

As a Parent/Family Engagement Cultural Diversity Specialist, you will:

  • Be responsible for providing support services to culturally diverse clients.
  • Support the development of culturally appropriate workshops, presentations and events and facilitates them in partnership with community partners such as the Vancouver School Board.
  • Implement proactive approaches to support the prevention of youth’s problematic substance use by working primarily with parents and families of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Partner with prevention initiatives in schools, communities and staff to identify trends, needs and priorities.
  • Coordinate, plan and implement relevant methods of outreach that will strengthen parent/family awareness, knowledge and skills to prevent, delay and intervene with respect to adolescent substance use. Provides brief individual support to caregivers as required.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Social Services discipline from a recognized program.
  • Two (2) years recent related experience providing substance use-related support to culturally diverse youth and families.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License. Local area travel requires the use of a personal vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge in child/youth care, youth development, and behaviour management as it relates to addiction and substance use.
  • Ability to develop and implement strength-based, client-centered prevention programs or related programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations
  • Knowledge of cultural diversity in youth and families, and culturally safe ways of engaging.
  • Ability to perform a range of needs assessments with both individuals and groups.
  • Knowledge of community development, adult education and health promotion practices.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate workshops.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain supportive, trusting and professional relationships with youth and adults.
  • General knowledge of trauma informed practice and harm reduction approaches and strengths-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain a variety of charts, records and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with clients and their families, colleagues, physicians, and other health care staff, both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload and adapt to a changing community.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
