As a Mental Health and Substance Use Wellness Support Coordinator with VCH you will:

• Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to coordinates care and support for people with mental health and substance use issues using an outreach model that is strengths-based and harm reduction focused.
• Support access to treatment and recovery services including crisis intervention and group facilitation,
• Establish and maintain relationships with clients,
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team and other community resources,
• Liaise and consult with internal/external physicians, governmental and community social service, health and mental health agencies to facilitate clients’ wellness journeys.
• Participate in committees and meetings, engage in on-going team planning, development and quality improvement activities, and maintain and update own knowledge.

ABOUT BELLA BELLA, BC

Bella Bella is a beautiful island community off the central coast of British Columbia, 690 km north of Vancouver. It is surrounded by a magical world of channels, inlets and old growth forest. It is home to salmon, orcas, humpbacks, bald eagles and the other denizens of the Pacific Northwest. The climate is mild and the area is a paradise for kayaking, sport fishing, hiking and photography.

The Heiltsuk Hospital in Bella Bella has 7 acute beds, 7 long term care beds and a 4-bed emergency department open 24/7, along with Laboratory and Diagnostic Imaging services. It offers telehealth services as well as speciality clinics. Heiltsuk Hospital also has an Intensive Case Management team for mental health and substance use. There is a medical clinic and a pharmacy located in the hospital. The healthcare team consists of Physicians, RNs, LPNs, PCAs, Laboratory and Radiology Technologists, Combined Lab/X-Ray Technologists, Pharmacist, Pharmacy Assistants, and Support Services Personnel.

Heiltsuk Hospital is located on the traditional territories of the Heiltsuk Nation. It is one of the only provincial hospitals located on a reserve in all of Canada.

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a behavioural science from a recognized program, two (2) years’ recent related experience working in community based or Indigenous-led or First Nations organizations with individuals who have substance use issues and/or those suffering from complex mental health issues, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Valid BC Drivers License. Local area travel may require the use of a personal vehicle.
• Pursuant to Section 41 of the British Columbia Human Rights Code, preference will be given to individuals of Indigenous identity (First Nations, Inuit, Metis).

Knowledge & Abilities

• Demonstrate knowledge of mental health and substance-use services in the community and across British Columbia.
• Demonstrate knowledge of health inequities and discrimination faced by designated client population.
• Demonstrated ability to identify and recognize current health care system gaps and barriers faced by designated client population.
• Demonstrate knowledge of strengths based, client centered approach and ability to incorporate this into practice.
• Demonstrate knowledge of substance-use recovery model and principles of recovery in mental wellness, including the principles of harm reduction in a health care setting
• Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated ability to provide culturally appropriate and culturally safe care, has knowledge and awareness of Indigenous cultural practices, has completed Indigenous Cultural Safety Training.
• Broad knowledge of psychotherapeutic and counselling skills including modalities such as Motivational Interviewing (MI).
• Demonstrated knowledge of trauma and violence-informed practice
• Broad knowledge of legislation and government policies and procedures that relate to people who use substances and their support network.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct social, psychosocial and mental health and substance use assessments.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with clients, colleagues, physicians, and other health care staff, both one-on-one and in groups.
• Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of theory and practice to a case management process.
• Demonstrated ability to establish rapport with clients, their families, their community and local service providers.
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of individuals/service providers.
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
• Demonstrated ability to adjust to unexpected events, analyze and problem-solve, set priorities, deal effectively with conflict, and respond to crisis.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
• Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized client care information system and word processing, spreadsheet, Internet and e-mail software.
