The Psychiatrists will have the opportunity to contribute in a very meaningful way through the delivery of health services provided to the residents of Vancouver Community of Care. The VCH Psychiatry team currently consists of over 100 psychiatrists based throughout multiple sites in Vancouver. As a medical resource, the Psychiatrist is a leader, providing expertise for the personalized and coordinated care for clients with chronic mental illness and who often have co-occurring disorders such as personality disorders, substance use, and developmental or intellectual disability. As the physician managing complex cases requiring symptom management support with VCH therapeutic and outreach programs, the Psychiatrist consults and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to provide specialist treatment for patients with a full spectrum of mental health needs.
Specific duties and responsibilities: Vancouver ACT is now recruiting 1 or 2 psychiatrists to work with two teams (Vancouver/VCH ACT Teams 4 & 5) that serve community-dwelling clients with complex mental health needs. The target population typically has high levels of comorbidity, including substance use disorders, general health problems and a significant risk of aggression. The work is fast paced, exciting, and intense in nature. Collaborative care-planning and problem solving are keys to finding clinical and practical interventions to support these complex clients, many of whom are certified under the Mental Health Act, and to maintain them successfully in the community.
Your role will involve significant outreach, both independently and with clinical colleagues in a variety of settings, including; private residences, SROs, shelters, corrections offices, jail, and public areas (i.e. coffee shops). You will partner with amazing teams of Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Health Care Workers, Peer Specialists, GP’s, Concurrent Disorders Clinicians, Clinical Coordinators, and Vancouver Police ACT liaison officers to provide the requisite quality care.
Participating in Clinical Team meetings and taking a lead role when required, you will be involved in the assessment and management of new referrals to the team as well as providing ongoing care and treatment to existing clients. This role will also support the management of acute psychiatric emergencies and hospital recalls, with an emphasis on risk assessment and management. Collaborating with other care providers, including housing providers, inpatient and community mental health teams, VPD and judicial courts, you will play a key role in providing expertise in pharmacologic treatments, providing reports and oral evidence at Mental Health Review Panel Hearings, as well as providing clinical guidance and training to medical trainees, residents and nursing students.
Please note: while the program operates 7 days/week, with outreach available from 9.30am to 7.30pm, the Psychiatrist will predominantly work a Monday-Friday schedule (i.e. they may be required to provide occasional weekend coverage). Also, it is anticipated their ACT work could be paired with other community-based programs, on an ongoing/part time basis, as desired.
