Eligibility for the Sexual Assault Nurse Program is restricted to applicants with 2 years recent Acute Care or 2 years recent Public Health experience. 

Applicants must successfully complete the post-basic training education prior to working in the Department. 

Candidates accepting this training opportunity must agree to remain in the department for at least 18 months subsequent to completing training. This will ensure you are able to consolidate and apply your skills in the specialty area that VCH has supported and funded you to complete.

Salary

The salary range for this position is CAD $41.42/Hr. - CAD $55.91/Hr.

As a Registered Nurse in Sexual Assault Nursing Services you will:

  • Use a best practices approach, provide comprehensive forensic nursing care to patients triaged to Sexual Assault Nursing services.
  • Practice within the scope of practice as set by the organization, as per VCH policies and guidelines/clinical practice documents and within own competence.
  • Align with the vision, mission, goals and values of the organization as well as with the concept of a client and family centred care model.

ABOUT SECHELT HOSPITAL

 

Sechelt Hospital is an acute care, 46-bed facility located in Sechelt, British Columbia and serves over 30,000+ residents of the Lower Sunshine Coast. Sechelt Hospital provides a full range of services to the community, including Emergency care, Renal program-community dialysis units, Mental Health and Substance Use Services, surgical services, birthing for low-risk pregnancies and imaging services.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Completion of recognized Sexual Assault/Forensic Nurse Examiner coursework.
  • Two (2) years’ recent and related nursing experience in an acute or public health setting or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment (clinical and diagnostic reasoning) and provide nursing care through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety type interventions.
  • Ability to demonstrate therapeutic interviewing and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, families/care givers, the public, medical staff and members of the interprofessional care team using verbal, written and electronic communication means.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of contraceptive management and sexually transmitted infections.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote person-centered care that demonstrates empathy for patients and families/care givers, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, and patient advocacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a variety of professionals from the health and legal professions.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize patient care.
  • Demonstrated ability to use factual information, prior learning and basic principles and procedures to support nursing decisions and actions with relevant research-based evidence/evidence-informed practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to operated related equipment including relevant computer applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the physical duties of the position.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.  Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per the current Public Health Orders, as of October 5, 2023, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or have received a single dose of the most-recent, updated COVID-19 vaccine. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
