With a growing patient population, Vancouver Community Services is seeking a psychiatrist. The successful candidate will provide leadership to teams providing mental health services in clinical settings that serve the Downtown East Side (DTES) of Vancouver. This includes a mental health team and three sites with integrated care teams (ICTs) which provide personalized, coordinated care to clients in a seamless, patient-centred model.  Occasional outreach visits in the community are required. Knowledge and skill in opioid agonist therapy is desirable. On-call participation is optional.




The Psychiatrist will be called upon to provide expertise and consults, respond to case managers, and have a strong knowledge base in psychopharmacology and behavioral interventions. Additionally, they will facilitate continuity of care between hospital and community and liaise with hospital mental physicians and staff. This entails consultation to family physicians and nurse practitioners as well as working with case managers in a more traditional mental health team program. The multicultural population includes clients who may have had multiple psychiatric hospitalizations; unstable housing and/or relationships; itinerant existence; difficulties with activities of daily living; high risk for co-occurring medical conditions; substance use disorders; refractory treatment history; and risk of causing harm to self or others.


In addition, the successful candidate will also provide coordination activity which includes but is not limited to: managing physician scheduling, assisting with physician recruitment, and monitoring physician performance. Moreover, it is encouraged for the candidate to participate in local and quality improvement initiatives and coordinate medical student and resident training.

  • Eligibility: Provisional or unrestricted license to practice medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Eligibility or active fellowship in psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. Eligibility or current appointment as clinical faculty with University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine  
  • Experienced: At least 2 years of experience in a community mental health setting is required. Experience in caring for and treating severe mental illness, addiction, and concurrent disorder and personality disorders is preferred.
  • Passionate: Passionate about patient welfare you understand the importance of delivering high quality care in the context of complex health care systems.
  • A Strong Communicator: Understanding the importance of continuous and effective communication, you are highly skilled at listening, engaging and consulting with diverse stakeholders including patients, internal and external healthcare professionals and caseworker teams.
  • A Leader: have the ability to pull together the appropriate data and resources to make sound decisions that are based on fact and supported rationale. The common sense and good judgement to ‘make the call’ or understand the risks associated with certain decisions and able to work well under pressure.

The Medical Coordinator for DTES Mental Health will provide at least three days (6 sessions or .6 FTE) of clinical activity in the relevant clinics, plus indirect clinical activities and administrative work related to the medical coordinator role at approximately 60 sessions per year.

On-call participation is optional.



Mixed fee-for-service MSP billing (physician is responsible for own submissions) and sessional support for indirect clinical activities and for administrative functions (30 sessions per year).
